LIRR Air Brakes Practice Test 2026 – Complete Exam Prep

Brake shoes are crucial components of a train's braking system, specifically designed to create friction. When the brakes are applied, the brake shoes come into contact with the wheels or brake drums. This contact generates the necessary friction that slows down or halts the train's movement. The effectiveness of this friction depends on various factors, including the material of the brake shoes, the condition of the wheels, and the amount of force applied.

Understanding this function is essential, as it highlights the importance of maintenance and inspection of brake shoes to ensure they are in good condition for safe operations. Their primary role is not to stabilize the train, enhance air pressure, or connect parts of the braking system, but rather to provide the friction needed to achieve the desired braking effect. This makes the statement regarding their purpose as friction generators the most accurate.
